About Washington State Cougars

Football program was established at the Washington State University in 1893 and basketball was added in 1902. The Cougars are members of North Division in Pac- 12 Conference, NCAA Division I (FBS for football).The university’s mascot is a costumed cougar known by the name of Butch T. Cougar and it was first seen in 1927. The college’s colours are crimson and grey and the main rivals of the university are Washington Huskies, Idaho Vandals, Oregon State Beavers and Oregon Ducks.Football program at the university has lost more games than it won and their all- time record is 500-526-45. Despite that the Cougars won four conference championships and they appeared in 12 Bowl games.

The first bowl game the Cougars took part in was a winning one against Brown Bruins in 1916 at the Rose Bowl and their latest effort resulted with a win against Miami Hurricanes in 2015 at the Sun Bowl for a combined record of 7-5.One of the better known Cougars to play in NFL was Drew Bledsoe who was the face of the Patriots franchise for nine seasons until he suffered a near fatal injury and was replaced by Tom Brady who led the team to Super Bowl win, the only one Bledsoe was part of.Bledsoe was four times Pro Bowler and he was the youngest quarterback to appear in NFL All- Star game at the time. He was NFL passing yards leader in 1994 and was inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame. He played after his injury in couple of teams but without much success.

Basketball program, despite being named Premo- Porretta champions of 1917, had struggled to achieve sustained success.The Cougars appeared in 6 NCAA tournaments, recording one appearance in the Elite Eight and the Final Four (1941). The university won two conference regular season championships.There have not been many Cougars in NBA but one of the better known former Cougars playing in NBA is Klay Thompson who won NBA championship in 2015 and was part of the 2016 team that set new NBA regular season record with 73-9.Thompson is well known three point shooter who was twice NBA All- Star, NBA All- Rookie Team and NBA Three- point contest champion. He also won gold medal at the basketball World Cup in 2014 completing for the team USA.Washington State University hasn’t had many successful years in their history but their programs produced some notable players who found themselves very well once they reached the pro leagues.
