About Kansas Jayhawks

Kansas Jayhawks football program arrived to the university in 1890 with basketball following shortly after making its start in 1898. The college is member of Big 12 Conference, NCAA Division I. The Jayhawks’ colours are crimson and blue and the mascots are Big Jay and Baby Jay.

The university has currently one long lasting rivalry with Kansas State Wildcats. Other than that, the university had fierce rivalries with Missouri Tigers and Nebraska (which was the longest college rivalry) but both sadly became dormant since the other colleges were relocated to different conferences.

As far as football goes, the university has an all- time record of 579-610-58 and five conference championships to their name. The Jayhawks appeared in 12 Bowl games and currently they are on 3 winning streak of Bowl games but their last appearance happened in 2008. To date they recorded 6 wins to 6 losses in these games.

With not so much overall success one might not expect plenty of big names making it into NFL but there are Pro Football Hall of Famers in Gale Sayers and John Riggins.

Sayers played for seven seasons for Chicago Bears as running back, punt returner in late sixties until early seventies. He led the NFL in rushing yards two seasons, he was named to 4 Pro Bowls and 5 First Team All- Pros, as well as being NFL Rookie of the Year for UPI and NEA and UPI Comeback Player of the Year.

Riggins, spent over 14 seasons in NFL, playing for the Jets and then for Redskins (including one missing season due to a contract dispute). He was NFL MVP in 1983, Super Bowl champion as well as Super Bowl MVP with Redskins, he led the NFL in rushing touchdowns twice, he belongs to 10000 Rushing Yards Club and earlier in his career he was also Jets’ franchise MVP twice.

As far as basketball is concerned, the Jayhawks achieved more than football programs as they were pre tournament champions twice and further three times NCAA tournament champions adding another 6 appearances in the final game.

In total the Jayhawks had gone to 45 NCAA tournaments, including longest current streak of appearances in these with 26. The program is considered second on the list of most prestigious programs of modern basketball.

The most known Jayhawk in NBA is Wilt Chamberlain, who holds the record of most scored points in a game with 100 among many other records. He was 7 times NBA scoring champion, 11 times rebounds leader, assist leader once. Chamberlain was also NBA champion twice, with the 76ers and the Lakers. He went to 13 NBA All- Star games, was the league’s MVP four times and once he was the NBA finals MVP. Quite a career.

It is quite prominent that Kansas excels at delivering high quality athletes, especially including those who play basketball. In case of this university the football has to live in the shade of court hoops and dunks.
