About SMU Mustangs

Southern Methodist University introduced football program in 1915 and basketball was added a year later in 1916. The university was a member of several conferences through its history and since 2013 the Mustangs are members of West Division in American Athletic Conference, NCAA Division I (FBS for football).

SMU’s mascot is a live Shetland pony that is named Peruna and the name carries on from each successive pony to next one. School’s colours are blue and red.

The Mustangs rivals are TCU as their fiercest opponent and Rice Owls, North Texas and Navy as the other better known ones.

Football program at SMU has not had a lot success through the years as the Mustangs won 11 conference titles and two divisional championships to date holding an all- time record of 477-522-54.

The school took part in 15 Bowl games with the first one being a loss to West Virginia at the Dixie Classic. Their latest Bowl game was a win against Fresno State in 2012 during Hawaii Bowl. To date the Mustangs are 7-7-1 in Bowl games.

The university produced one Heisman Trophy winner, Doak Walker who went onto being Pro Football Hall of Famer.

Walker played halfback, kicker, punter positions through six seasons he spent in NFL, during that time he was NFL champion twice with Detroit Lions, he was chosen to five pro bowls and five times he earned All- Pro mentions in his career. He also won Rookie of the Year award.

SMU produced few other Hall of Famers including another running back, Eric Dickerson who played in NFL for 11 seasons for several teams. He was NFL rushing yards leader four times, NFL offensive player of the year once, NFL MVP and he holds the NFL record for most rushing yards in a season with 2105.

Basketball didn’t have great deal of success either and the Mustang’s biggest accomplishment was to reach the Final Four in 1956. Altogether the SMU went to 11 NCAA tournaments having best years through the fifties and the sixties. Their only XXI century NCAA tournament was in 2015 and the Mustangs didn’t advance out of the initial round.

SMU has two conference tournament championships and 14 conference regular season titles to their name. There were only a handful of Mustangs that played in NBA and one of them was Jon Koncak who stayed in NBA for 12 seasons playing for the Hawks and the Magic. He was also a gold medallist for USA at 1984 Olympic Games.

SMU doesn’t have a great tradition in succeeding in team efforts but the school has produced few high quality players, mainly in NFL, who managed to leave a mark in the record books.
