About Pittsburgh Panthers

University of Pittsburgh introduced football program to its students in 1890. Basketball was added at later time in 1906. The university has been a member of few conferences and currently the Panthers are located in Coastal Division of Atlantic Coast Conference, NCAA Division I (FBS for football).

A panther is the university mascot and it was chosen in 1909. It is usually known as Pitt Panther. The colours of the school are navy blue and gold.

Pittsburgh Panthers have few rivalries that include these with Penn State University, Notre Dame and Syracuse.

The most popular sport at the university, football, claimed nine national championships and it is in top of 20 of universities in terms of all- time wins. The Panthers have all- time record of 704-515-42 and two conference to add to their trophy cabinet.

University of Pittsburgh took part in 32 bowl games with a combined record of 13-19. Their first bowl game was in 1927 at Rose Bowl where the Panthers lost to Stanford 6-7. Their last appearance occurred in 2015 at Military Bowl where defeat to Navy was recorded in Panthers books.

University of Pittsburgh is one of the most fertile NFL draft pipelines with nearly 300 Panthers being drafted to NFL teams, including one Heisman Trophy winner in Tony Dorsett and one of several Pro Football Hall of Famers Dan Marino.

Dorsett, running back, drafted 2nd overall played for 11 seasons in NFL, all but one season with the Cowboys. He was chosen to 4 Pro Bowls, he was NFL offensive rookie of the year, Super Bowl champion and a holder of a record for the longest rushing play in NFL with 99 yards.

Marino, quarterback drafted by Miami, played all his career there for 17 seasons and he was named NFL Rookie of the Year, NFL Offensive Player of the Year, NFL MVP, PFWA Comeback Player of the Year at various points in his career.

Marino never claimed Super Bowl win but he was NFL passing yards leader five times and passing touchdown leader three times, he was also selected to nine Pro Bowls in his career.

Basketball at the University of Pittsburgh had claimed Premo- Porretta championship in 1928 and since the tournament started the Panthers best effort was reaching the Final Four in 1941.

Overall the Panthers appeared in 26 NCAA tournaments and have won four conference tournament titles and 10 conference regular season championships.

There have been over 30 players selected in ABA or NBA draft with one of the most recent picks being Steven Adams, center drafted by the Thunder in first round of 2013 draft. Adams made into NBA All- Rookie Second Team in his first NBA season.

With a long and well known history of fielding many well known NFL players, University of Pittsburgh is set to carry on the tradition with basketball program grabbing five minutes of fame when possible.
