Beaver Stadium has been the home of the Pennsylvania State University football program since the venue opened in 1960. The stadium is the third largest in the world due to its capacity of over 106500. Some parts of the venue date back all the way to 1909. About Penn State Nittany Lions

Football was established at Pennsylvania State University in 1887 and basketball was added to its program in 1897. Mostly playing as independent university, the Penn State joined the Big Ten Conference in 1993. They’re in East Division, NCAA Division I.

The university’s mascot is a nittany lion, a creature believed to roam Mount Nittany and it refers to mountain lions. The colours representing Penn State are blue and white.

The Nittany Lions have rivals in Pittsburgh Panthers, Michigan State Spartans, Ohio State Buckeyes and Minnesota Golden Gophers.

The Nittany Lions have been quite a successful football program winning four national championships and having four conference titles to their name. Penn State have an all- time record of 856-382-42 which places them in eighth place in total wins.

The Nittany Lions took part in 46 bowl games, including 21 appearances in major bowls where they are combined 14-6-1. The Penn State’s first bowl game was at Rose Bowl in 1922 and it resulted in a loss to USC. The last bowl appearance of the Lions was at Taxslayer Bowl in 2015 which saw the Lions losing against Georgia.

The university has produced one Heisman Trophy winner in John Cappelletti, a running back that played in 105 games in NFL for the Rams and the Chargers.

There are 11 Nittany Lions who were enshrined into Pro Football Hall of Fame including players such as Dave Robinson, a linebacker and placekicker who played mostly for Green Bay Packers. He was named to three Pro Bowls, Pro Bowl MVP and he won two Super Bowls playing for the Packers.

Basketball spent most of the programs existence in the shadow of football program’s successes but the Nittany Lions had some success through the years including the Final Four appearance in 1954, two Elite Eight appearances and further 7 NCAA tournament appearances with their last one occurring in 2011.

Penn State has also been conference tournament champions ten times and they have won one conference division season championship.

There have been some NBA draftees that made onto having a long careers in NBA including players such as Bob Weiss and Calvin Booth.

Weiss is currently an assistant coach for the Hornets, he won NBA title with the 76ers. He played in NBA for 13 seasons.

Booth, spent 11 seasons in NBA playing as center for several teams, he was twice gold medalist at Goodwill Games.

With Pennsylvania State University having football program as their primary one it is hard for basketball to get through into more national spotlight even when the program’s doing well.
