About New Mexico State Aggies

Football’s first appearance at New Mexico University was in 1894 and the football program is part of Sun Belt Conference since 2012 when the previous Western Athletic Conference, to which the basketball program belongs, removed football from its list of supporting teams. Regardless both sports are part of NCAA Division I.

The colours that describe the Aggies are crimson and white; the university mascot duties belong to Pistol Pete, who is usually portrayed by a student wearing traditional cowboys costume.

The Aggies have two main rivals which are New Mexico Lobos and UTEP Miners.

New Mexico State Aggies have not been a very successful program through the years and they are currently the record holder of the longest drought with no Bowl game appearance among the FBS teams that dates back to 1960, when The Aggies won against Utah State at the Sun Bowl.

The Aggies have all- time Bowl record of 2-0-1 and an all- time overall record of 420-615-30 and four conference championships to their name, with first one being won in 1938 and the latest dating back to 1978.

With very little team success there wasn’t great amount of chances for the Aggies players to reach the NFL and among those who had, there was little success or glory involved although some of the Aggies won Super Bowl, like NFL kicker, Roy Galera, and some others had left their mark inside of the franchises they played for such as Charley Johnson.

Galera, drafted by the Oilers, went onto winning three Super Bowls with Pittsburgh Steelers. He was chosen to take part in two Pro Bowls and in 1974 he won PFW Golden Toe Award.

Johnson, played as quarterback for 15 years, winning one Pro Bowl nomination and being included in Denver Broncos Ring of Fame.

Basketball had managed to sustain some level of continuity, especially through the sixties and the seventies as well as the nineties and most recently last several years and the Aggies reached 22 NCAA Tournaments with their highest round being the Final Four, that they reached in 1970. They have also been conference tournament champions 15 times and have won 9 conference regular season titles.

Randy Brown is probably the most decorated Aggie among the NBA players as he won three NBA titles while playing for Chicago Bulls in the nineties providing valuable energy out of the bench. He’s currently a coach assistant for the Chicago Bulls.
