About Vancouver Canucks
Vancouver Canucks were founded in 1970 as NHL expansion team although their predecessor also known by the same name existed since 1945 and was part of minor leagues in Canada.
Since joining the NHL the franchise has travelled three times to the Finals, losing all three match ups, the last one being in 2010-11 against the Bruins. The same season the Canucks won the Presidents’ Trophy repeating the feat a season later.
The team had its ups and downs but it seems like the Canucks were always able to shake off few bad years and they never really were out of playoffs for longer periods of time. Since the beginning of the century they missed the postseason action only three times.
The franchise can also enjoy their 10 divisional trophies that they acquired through the years. They’re currently allocated to Pacific Division in Western Conference and are yet to claim its title.
The team’s colours are blue, green and white, while Fin the Whale is the team’s official mascot.
The head coaching duties are Willie Desjardnis’ job and it is his first head coaching post in the NHL. He joined the franchise in 2014 after leasing his AHL team Texas Stars to the Calder Cup, championship in AHL.
The first choice of a goalie is veteran Ryan Miller who the team acquired in the 2014 off season. He spent most of his career with the Sabres where he won Vezina Trophy in 2010 for being the top golkatender. Since he is 35 years old the team also invested in young who they acquired via trade in 2014 hoping he might develop in the future of Canucks’ netminding.
The captain’s role is fulfilled by Henrik Sedin, 3rd overall pick in 1999 draft. The center spent all his NHL career with the Canucks and after few years of playing with the team he became a driving force behind the franchises successes. He was recognised across the league when in 2010 he captured Art Ross Trophy and Hart Memorial Trophy for leading the league in point scoring and being the MVP respectively. He holds several records within the franchise that might be there for some time.
He’s got the pleasure of playing with his identical brother Daniel who was chosen with 2nd overall pick in the same draft. Unlike his brother, Daniel is more of offensive player scoring plenty of goals while allowing Henrik to be a playmaker. The same as his brother, Daniel spent all his career with the franchise winning Cyrus H. McLean Trophy (leading point scorer in Canucks) 4 times and being named the team’s MVP once in his career.
There’s plenty of savvy experience on the ice but hopefully the management will try to bring more youth so they can have a chance to inhale of the wisdom of the elders while still fighting for the very top spot.
