The War Memorial Stadium nicknamed “The War” has been used by the University of Wyoming football program since 1950. Thanks to sitting at lofty elevation of 2199 meters above the sea level the stadium is the highest located stadium in Division I college football.The seating capacity at the venue is just over 29000 but the record of Wyoming Cowboys tickets sold fell in 1997 where a crowd of 34745 fans watched home team playing against Colorado State.Basketball program at the university has used the Arena- Auditorium since its opening in 1982. The multi- purpose arena has a seating capacity of over 15000 in basketball configuration.
Football program at the University of Wyoming finds its roots in 1892 and basketball program established itself in 1905. The Cowboys are members of the Mountain Division in Mountain West Conference, NCAA Division I (FBS for football).University of Wyoming has two mascots; a costumed cowboy named Pistol Pete and a live pony named Cowboy Joe. The colours of the university are brown and gold.The Cowboys’ main rivals are Colorado State, Hawaii Rainbow Warriors and Utah State.Football program at Wisconsin brought 15 conference championships home while posting an all- time record of 511-556-31. The Cowboys are 6-7 in their Bowl games that started with four consecutive wins, first one happening at the Gator Bowl in 1951 against Washington & Lee Generals. After the four wins there was a six games streak of losses broken by two wins and the Cowboys’ last Bowl game ended with a loss to Temple Owls in 2011 at the New Mexico Bowl.
There were Super Bowl champions among the former players of the University of Wyoming including Jerry Hill, a running back who played for Baltimore Colts for 10 seasons, contributing to their win in Super Bowl V and Jay Novacek, six round pick of 1985 draft who played in NFL for 12 seasons mainly as a tight end.His success came in second part of his career while playing for the Cowboys. He was selected to Pro Bowl five times and he was a three time Super Bowl champion.Basketball program at the college was credited with Helms championship in 1934 and they won NCAA tournament in 1943. The Cowboys went to 15 NCAA tournaments including four trips to the Elite Eight round outside of their championship run.University of Wyoming was three times conference champions and 21 times they claimed conference regular season title.
One of the better known Cowboys was Ken Sailors who popularised the jump shot as an alternative way of the two handed flat footed set shot.From former Cowboys who reached NBA Theo Ratliff is one of more decorated players.Ratliff played 17 seasons in NBA and he was three times the leading blocker in the league, he was named to All- Defensive Second Team twice and once he earned NBA All- Star nomination. He also was a good medallist in FIBA World Championship for under 21 playing for the team USA.There might not have been many big names that left the university and settled well in the pro leagues but in the end the college can’t complain about their team success as well as developing potential big league athletes.
