Waldo Stadium has been used by Western Michigan University football program since its opening day in 1939. Western Michigan University founded its football program in 1906 and a basketball one in 1913. They are currently members of West Division in Mid- American Conference, NCAA Division I (FBS for football).The university’s mascot is Buster Bronco and the colours behind the university are brown and gold.The main Bronco’s rivals are Central Michigan Chippewas and Eastern Michigan Eagles.Football program has won three conference titles starting with a title in 1929 and having their latest success in 1988. The Broncos’ all- time record is 535-434-24 and they have been to 7 Bowl games compiling 1-6 record that began with a loss to New Mexico Lobos in 1961 at the Aviation Bowl.

The first and only win in bowl games in Broncos history was their latests game against Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders in 2015 at the Bahamas Bowl.There have been some NFL draft selections from Western Michigan including players who were Pro Bowlers like Jason Babin and Greg Jennings.Babin, first round pick linebacker has been a typical journeyman and he played for 10 teams since 2004. He’s currently on the Cardinals roster. In his career he was chosen to two Pro Bowls, he recorded 64.5 sacks and 14 forced fumbles to date.

Jennings, a wide receiver spent his first 7 seasons with the Packers where he won Super Bowl ring and was voted to two Pro Bowls. He was also NFC receiving touchdown co- leader in 2010. He’s currently on the Dolphins roster.Basketball program has not had much more success than football one and the Broncos took part in 4 NCAA tournaments reaching the Sweet Sixteen round once, in 1976.Western Michigan were twice conference tournament champions and 6 times they have won conference regular season title.There have been only several players that ended up playing a game in NBA but none of them managed to stay there for prolonged times.Walker Russell had been bouncing on and off NBA teams between the years 1982 and 1988 for the Pistons, Hawks and the Pacers. After retiring he went onto being assistant coach and later a player scout.Western Michigan University has not managed to capture a great team or individual success but there have been some former Broncos that managed to have long careers in NFL.
