Football program at West Virginia was founded in 1891 and basketball one was added in 1903. The Mountaineers claimed 15 conference titles and appeared in 34 bowl games with a combined record of 15-19. Their first bowl game was against Gonzaga Bulldogs at the San Diego Christmas Classic which resulted with a win. Their latest bowl game was a winning effort against Arizona State Sun Devils at the Cactus Bowl in 2016.There’s been over 180 draft selections coming from West Virginia including two linebackers Chuck Howley and Sam Huff.Howley was a Super Bowl champion with the Cowboys as well as the Super Bowl MVP. He was selected to 6 Pro Bowls,5 AP First- team All- Pro during his 15 season career with the Bears and the Cowboys.Huff, was an NFL champion with the Giants. He was selected to 5 Pro Bowls, 4 First- team All- Pro as well as NFL 1950s All- Decade Team. He was eventually enshrined in Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Basketball program was once NCAA tournament runner-ups in 1959 and they also reached the Final Four once more in 2010. Altogether the Mountaineers went to 27 NCAA tournaments and claimed 13 conference tournament championships and they won 15 conference regular season titles.One of the best known former players from West Virginia was Jerry West, second overall draft pick of 1960. He played 15 seasons for the Lakers where he won NBA championship and was named NBA Finals MVP.West was 14 times NBA- All Star, including one NBA All- Star MVP; he was NBA scoring champion in 1970 and NBA assist leader in 1972. 10 All- NBA First Team selections are still worth a mention.West Virginia is better known for its football program success and many football players that were selected by NFL teams but basketball has done its best to keep up.
