University of Virginia has used the Scott Stadium since its opening in 1931 as the venue for their football program. Basketball program at the University of Virginia had some great period of the success in the 1980s and 1990s and the Cavaliers went to 20 NCAA tournaments including six appearances in the Elite Eight round and two in the Final Four that remain the best results to date achieved by the Cavaliers.The university was two times conference tournament champion and they also claimed 8 conference regular season titles, 7 coming from competing in the ACC.One of the better known Cavaliers that played in NBA was Ralph Johnson who was drafted first overall in 1983 by the Rockets. He spent 9 seasons in NBA where he was four times NBA All- Star, including NBA All- Star MVP. He was named the Rookie of the Year and he was named to All-NBA Second Team once. He was also a gold medallist from Pan American Games in 1979.University of Virginia has, despite a lack of overall team success and national championships, developed plenty of athletes who found themselves delivering a high quality performances once they reached the pro leagues.
