About Temple Owls

Temple University had fielded its first football team in 1894, the same year as the basketball program was started. Through the years Temple had been members of few conferences but since 2012 the university is a member of East Division in the American Atlantic Conference, NCAA Division I.
Temple’s mascot is a live owl named Stella and a costumed one called Hooter the Owl. School’s colours are cherry and white.
The Owls’ main rivals are the Penn State Nittany Lions, Rutgers Scarlet Knights and Villanova Wildcats.
Football program at Temple University has had some periods of success but in general the Owls struggled and won one conference title and two division titles, each earned while members of different conferences.
The Owls have an all- time record of 446-578-52 and five Bowl game appearances where they have posted a 2-3 record to date.
There have been Super Bowl champions that came from Temple including players such as Anthony Anderson and Todd Bowles.
Anderson played only few seasons in NFL and he only recorded one touchdown but he also was part of the Steelers team who won Super Bowl in 1980.
Bowles had played as a safety for eight seasons winning Super Bowl with the Redskins. He recorded 15 interceptions and started 20 games. He then became a coach and in 2015 he became the head coach of the Jets after winning AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year award year earlier.
Basketball brought a bit more glory to Temple University as the Owls were awarded Premo- Porretta championship for 1938. Temple went to 32 NCAA Tournaments reaching the Final Four phase twice and the Elite Eight 7 times.
Temple are only the 6th team in NCAA history to reach 1800 wins and 741 of them came from time when the Owls were coached by Hall of Famer, John Chaney.
The school has won 9 conference tournament championships and they also claimed 20 conference regular season titles to date.
Some notables from Temple include Eddie Jones and Bill Cosby.
Jones, played in NBA for 15 seasons during which he earned three NBA All- Star nominations, and three time he was All- defensive Second Team. He also led the league in steals in 2000.
Bill Cosby who is a famous comedian is a supporter of the university as he attended it during his youth time.
There isn’t a lot of big profiled names in pro leagues that came from Temple University but the school had managed to produce pro athletes from time to time.
