About TCU Horned Frogs

Texas Christian University added football to its offer in 1896 and expanded it with addition of basketball in 1913. Through the years the university was a member of several conferences but since 2011 the Horned Frogs are members of Big 12 Conference, NCAA Division I.

TCU’s mascot is the big eyed and wide mouthed Super Frog and the colours representing the school are purple and white. TCU’s main rivalries are formed with Baylor Bears, Texas Tech and SMU Mustangs.

Football program at TCU claimed two national championships that were won in the 1930s. The Horned Frogs won 18 conference titles and have an all- time record of 626-531-15.

In 2014 TCU became just the fourth program in history that competed in all six of the modern day CFP Bowls. Their first bowl game was a blowout loss (7-63) to Center College at Fort Worth Classic in 1921. Their latest appearance was marked with a win against Oregon at Alamo Bowl in 2016. TCU has a record of 15-15-1 in 31 bowl games they took part in.

The university produced one Heisman Trophy winner in Davey O’Brien, a quarterback who played two seasons for Philadelphia Eagles and led the league in passing yards in his rookie season. He also played at defensive back and punter positions.

There were more successful Horned Frogs in the NFL than O’Brien as the school has two Pro Football Hall of Famers in Sammy Baugh and Bob Lilly.

Baugh played 16 seasons with the Redskins as quarterback winning two NFL championships, being named player of the year twice and taking part in five All- Stars and one Pro Bowls. He was also named NFL 75th Anniversary All- Time Team.

Lilly, 11 times Pro Bowler defensive tackle, spent all his 14 seasons in NFL playing for the Cowboys winning a Super Bowl ring with them as well as also being named to NFL 75th Anniversary All- Time Team.

Basketball at TCU has been struggling recently since joining the Big 12 as the Horned Frogs have 8-60 record there. TCU went to 7 NCAA tournaments, their last one being in 1998.

Their highest round was the Elite Eight they reached in 1968. The university won 11 conference regular season titles to date.

There weren’t many players who settled in NBA but Kurt Thomas had played for variety of teams through 18 years of his NBA career managing to play full 82 games season only once. He’d been known for hard nosed playing style and tough defensive skillset.

While TCU isn’t a powerhouse college, their programs, especially football one managed to produce some quality athletes that went onto having great careers in the pro leagues.
