About Tampa Bay Lightning
The franchise came to life in 1992 and it went through the quite common struggles of a new team recording only one playoff appearance in first ten season of playing in the league.
Beginning of the new century also brought a new feel for the franchise and the Lightning won their only Stanley Cup in 2003-2004 to go along few postseason trips. The franchise has also reached the finals once more in last season of 2014-15 where they were defeated by the Blackhawks.
The team can also be proud of their two divisional titles they clinched between 2002 and 2004. Currently the commonly known as the Bolts, Lightning are a part of Atlantic Division in Eastern Conference that was realigned in 2013.
Their colours are blue, white and black and the franchise is proudly represented by ThunderBug, a friendly mascot-bug who apparently enjoys parties and street hockey.
Jon Cooper has been the Bolts’ head coach since 2013. It is his first head coaching post in NHL but he has coached various team since 2001 when he started in NAHL.
The goaltending is mainly left in Ben Bishop’s hands. Nicknamed “Big Ben” due to his height he was traded to the Lightning in 2012-13 season where he fairly quickly established himself as the starter and set out setting some milestones in the club history as well as in the NHL books. He finished third in voting for Vezina Trophy (top goaltender) in 2013-14 due to his stellar season in the net.
Team’s captain is a young center, Steven Stamkos who was drafted first overall in 2008 draft and who spent all his NHL career with the Bolts. He quickly established himself as the top offensive weapon in the league grabbing Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy twice (2010 and 2012) for being the top goal scorer in the league. He also holds the franchise record in most goals scored in a season with 60.
His main support comes from plenty of assists generated by defenceman Victor Hedman who was drafted 2nd overall in draft year later after Stamkos.
He is known for a great potential to become one of the best defenceman in the NHL and he is definitely appreciated in his country Sweden where he won Guldpucken in 2015 that is normally awarded to players playing in Sweden who are considered the player of the year.
Tampa Bay Lightning has acquired some strong and potent players in recent years and with adequate development and recent team’s success there might be another Stanley cup Trophy on the horizon.
