Raymond James Stadium is the home for University of South Florida football program as well as having NFL Tampa Bay Buccaneers as its tenants too. The nearly 66000 seats capacity venue (expandable to 75000) also host Outback Bowl annually. The stadium was in use since 1998 and it was a host to two Super Bowls. The venue’s most recognisable feature is a 103- foot long and 43- ton steel and concrete heavy replica of a pirate ship. The money spent on USF Bulls tickets are always well spent as the venue has a lot to offer. Basketball at USF is played at the Sun Dome, a multi- purpose facility that opened in 1980 and can accommodate over 10000 fans on game nights.
Basketball arrived first to University of South Florida as the program was introduced in 1971. It took another 26 years for USF to establish its football program in 1997.USF has been a member of several conferences and currently they are located in East Division of American Athletic Conference, NCAA Division I.The mascot representing the university is costumed Rocky The Bull and the colours of the school are green and gold.
Despite not a very long history (especially in football) and many conference changes the USF established few rivalries including their fiercest one against UCF Knights. The Bulls are yet to win a division or conference title as a football program. Their all- time record stands at 125-101 and they have been to 7 Bowl games starting with a shutout loss against NC State at Meineke Car Care Bowl in 2005. Their latest bowl showing was a loss to Western Kentucky at Miami Beach Bowl in 2015. The Bulls are combined 4-3 in these games.
There have been over 20 draftees coming from USF including two first round picks, Jason Pierre- Paul and Mike Jenkins.
Pierre- Paul, drafted in 2010 has been playing defensive end for the Giants where he won Super Bowl with them and earned two Pro Bowl nominations. His career suffered a bit of setback in summer 2015 when he lost some fingers in a bizarre firework mishap during July the 4th celebrations.Jenkins, drafted in 2008 by the Cowboys earned one Pro Bowl nomination and scored one defensive touchdown and 10 interceptions in his career.Basketball, despite being longer tenured sport at USF than football, has struggled to generate success as the Bulls appeared first time in NCAA tournament in 1990. To date they have earned only 3 visits to the tournament and only once they broke out of initial round, reaching Round of 32 in 2012.The Bulls were once Sun Belt conference tournament champions and once they won conference regular season title while playing in Conference USA.
There have been only few Bulls that played a game in NBA, including Chucky Atkins, who spent ten seasons in NBA playing for several teams and also being named to NBA All- Rookie Second Team; and Dominique Jones who’s played in NBA for three seasons winning NBA championship with the Mavericks before heading off to Chinese Basketball Association where he was assist leader in 2015.
USF’s younger football program managed to develop quickly and it appears that it has taken over from basketball as the leading sport producing athletes that reach the pro leagues.
