About San Diego State Aztecs

Football and basketball arrived to San Diego State university in 1921. The Aztecs are members of West Division in Mountain West Conference, NCAA Division I (FBS for football).

The university’s mascot is an Aztec warrior Montezuma and the colours of the school are scarlet and black.

The university has a long list of rivals but their fiercest ones are Fresno State Bulldogs, among others like Air Force Falcons, Colorado State Rams and Nevada Wolf Pack.

San Diego State contributed to NFL in both, players and coaches and these include famous coaches such as Sean Payton, John Madden and Brian Billick all of whom had led their teams to Super Bowl wins.

Famous players include players such as Marshall Faulk, Pro Football Hall of Fame running back who claimed Super Bowl win playing for St. Louis Rams. Faulk was 7 times Pro Bowler, NFL MVP in 2000 and 2001 by various agencies, three times AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year and only one of two players to have 1000 rushing and receiving yards in one season.

Basketball program at San Diego State have gone to 11 NCAA Tournaments with their highest round achieved being the Sweet Sixteen in 2011 and 2014. The Aztecs also were conference tournament champions 6 times and 21 times they have claimed regular season titles.

There weren’t many Aztecs in the NBA but currently Kawhi Leonard is making a great case for San Diego State playing for the Spurs. Leonard was NBA Finals MVP helping the Spurs win the NBA championship in 2014. He was also named NBA Defensive Player of the Year twice in a row. Leonard also led the NBA in steals in 2015.

San Diego State might be better known for providing NFL with quality coaches and players but recent awakening in basketball might shake the order of things a little.
