The Rutgers University football program is seen as one of the most historic and iconic programs in the country. In 1869 Rutgers defeated Princeton University by a score 6-4 and to date it is considered to be the very first game of intercollegiate football.

Basketball was added in 1913. For many years the university competed as independent but currently the Scarlet Knights are members of East Division in Big Ten Conference, NCAA Division I (FBS for football).

The school’s mascot is Scarlet Knight elected by the campus in 1995 and the colour of the Rutgers is scarlet.

The main rivalries the Scarlet Knights face regularly are Navy Midshipmen, Army Black Knights and Maryland Terrapins.

The Rutgers University football program generated one national championship in 1869, one conference title and three divisional championships to date. The school has an all- time record of 641-621-42 and they were part of ten Bowl games, nine of which occurred in XXI century.

The Knights’ first bowl game was at Garden State Bowl in 1978 where the university was defeated by Arizona State. To date the Rutgers are 6-4 in Bowl games.

Rutgers has had a plethora of key contributing players through its long history. Recently the school managed to produce Super Bowl winners in players such as Marco Battaglia, Ray Rice and most recently Devin McCourty.

Battaglia spent seven season in NFL, mostly playing for the Bengals. He was part of Tampa Bay club that won Super Bowl XXXVII.

Ray Rice played five seasons for Baltimore before his suspension. He contributed to Ravens Super Bowl title, he was named to Pro Bowl three times as well as being NFL scrimmage yards leader in 2011.

McCourty has been playing for the Patriots since 2010 and won Super Bowl with them in 2014. He was named to one Pro Bowl and twice he earned second- team All- Pro mentions.

Basketball at Rutgers had had long period of struggle and it wasn’t until 1975 when the Scarlet Knights finally appeared at NCAA tournament.

To date they went to six NCAA tournaments and their best achievement was to reach the Final Four in 1976. Their last tournament game happened in 1991. Rutgers was four time conference tournament champion and they also have five regular season titles to their name.

There wasn’t many big names in NBA coming from Rutgers but players such as Eddie Jordan enjoyed a long time spent in NBA.

Jordan, played guard for seven seasons and was NBA champion with the Lakers. After retiring from playing he went onto coaching career and was NBA All- Star game head coach in 2007.

With very long history and historic first college football game the Rutgers is not a school where many big names players are coming from but it is still a good program for athletes who want to have a taste in long history and traditions while preparing for the big leagues if they wish.
