About Marquette Golden Eagles
The football program arrived to the university in 1892 and it was known under Marquette Golden Avalanche name. The last season the football was played at the university was 1960 and the closure of the program was due to financial issues.
Through 68 years the Avalanches recorded 349 wins to 280 losses and 39 ties. They went to one Bowl game which they lost to Texas Christian University in Cotton Bowl Classic.
The program fielded some players who went onto having career in NFL and even winning Super Bowl, namely George Andrie, defensive end who played 11 seasons for the Cowboys being part of the Super Bowl winning team from 1972. Andrie was five times Pro Bowler, NFL All- Rookie and Pro Bowl Co-MVP.
Marquette Golden Eagles basketball program came to life in 1916 and was known as the Warriors. They are currently members of Big East Conference and their main rivals are University of Wisconsin- Madison, DePaul University and University of Notre Same.
The Golden Eagles colours are blue and gold and the mascot is a costumed Gold Eagle.
The program, despite the university’s small size is known from making noise around itself. Marquette university won NCAA tournament in 1977 and to date the Golden Eagles took part in 31 NCAA tournaments including a streak of 8 straight appearances at the beginning of 21st century.
The program was conference tournament champion once and they also have four conference regular season titles to their name.
The Golden Eagles produced quite a few NBA stars including players like Dwayne Wade or Jimmy Butler both well known shooting guards.
Wade drafted 5th overall in 2003 draft spent all his career playing for Miami Heat, and won three NBA titles with them. He was also named NBA finals MVP, NBA All- Star Game MVP, he was NBA scoring champion in 2009 and is Miami’s all time leading scorer on top of appearing in 12 NBA All- Star Games and being named All- NBA First Team twice; he was also an two time medallist at Olympic games, once winning gold for the team USA.
Butler is yet to win NBA championship. He was drafted in first round of 2011 draft by Chicago Bulls where he’s been playing so far. He won the NBA Most Improved Player award in 2015 on top of two nominations to All- Star games and two mentions to NBA All- Defensive Second Team.
Despite the lack of very popular football program at the university, Marquette can enjoy team and individual success provided by the basketball players that find themselves among NBA stars.
