About Hawaii Rainbow Warriors

Hawaii Rainbow Warriors football program has its beginnings in 1909 when they won their first game 95-5 against McKinley High School. The program is located in Mountain West Conference, NCAA Division I FBS.

Basketball arrived to Hawaii in time for 1912 season when the Warriors lost only game out of seven played. The program is located in Big West Conference, NCAA Division I non- football.

The colleges colours are green, white, black and silver and their mascot is Vili the Warrior, the college’s main rivals are Fresno State, Boise State, BYU and Air Force.

The Rainbow Warriors have managed to win four conference championships with their football programs. They have an all time record of 524-391-26 and they went to 10 Bowl games (more if you include Non NCAA Sanctioned Bowl Games) and came victorious out of five of them, although their last three appearances had been losses and their last win occurred in 2006.

There aren’t many NFL players coming from Hawaii currently and there haven’t been many big names playing professional football from the university but through the years the programs fielded players who went onto becoming Super Bowl champions.

Their most accomplished player comes in a person of a placekicker, Jason Elam who was drafted in 3rd round of 1993 draft by the Broncos and went onto winning two Super Bowl titles with them. For some time he was tidied for the longest field goal in NFL history with three other players who did it from the distance of 63 yards, until the record fell to another Bronco years later.

Elam enjoyed three selections to Pro Bowl, and he was named three times to All- Pro Teams. He is now currently writing adventure books.

Basketball programs are yet really to have a long history of successes. To date the Rainbow Warriors appeared in five NCAA Tournament and their last appearance, in 2016, was the best as they reached Round of 32 for the first time in their history.

The college had also won four conference tournament championships and added three conference regular season titles to their tally.

Given how little success there was with basketball programs it is not a surprise not to see many players among the NBA breed.

Tom Henderson, a shooting guard had probably reached the furthest within the NBA as he was the league champion when playing for Washington Bullets. He was also silver medallist from Olympic Games in Munich where USA lost to USSR.

As one can see, going to study in Hawaii might not be the best path into professional sports but the weather and nice surroundings are definitely a perk one can enjoy while trying to break to the big leagues which isn’t an impossible task.
