FAU Stadium hosts the Florida Atlantic Owls football team. The venue that was opened only in 2011 can hold over 29000 spectators. The stadium is the first phase of the university complex of apartments and entertainment venues. It is also apparently the only stadium in the States that offers a view of open ocean, something that might be an added bonus for Florida Atlantic Bowls tickets holders.
For basketball needs, the Owls fans go to FAU Arena that opened in 1984 and was renovated over 20 years later to improve visitors satisfaction and comfort There are 5000 seats available for game days.
Florida Atlantic Owls football team came to life in 2001, 13 years after men’s basketball started their program at the university. Both programs are very young with little history behind them.
The college’s colours are blue and red and their mascot is Owsley the Owl. The main rival of the university is the FIU Panthers. The Owls are located in Conference- USA, NCAA Division I (FBS for football), East division.
As far as football goes the Owls have an all- time record of 73-106 and they accomplished four winning seasons out of 15 with one being an even 6-6. To date they have won one conference title and took part in two Bowl games, winning both of them. Their last game was in Motor City Bowl where they defeated Central Michigan 24-21.
One won’t be mistaken by saying there isn’t many NFL players coming from Florida Atlantic as the program is still growing in its own unique way but there were few players including running back Alfred Morris, or Rusty Smith a quarterback.
Morris, drafted by the Redskins in 6th round of 2012 draft responded fairly quickly with three Pepsi NFL Rookie of the week awards as well as being named to Second Team All- Pro and chosen to two Pro Bowls.
During his rookie season he also went onto setting the Redskins franchise record in rushing yards in a single season with 1613. To date he racked up 29 rushing touchdowns and averaged 4.4 yards per carry. He signed two year deal with the Cowboys in 2016 during off season.
Smith, two times MVP of Bowl games was drafted by the Titans in 6th round of 2010 draft and his career never took off as he managed only 234 yards and four in receptions before being waived by the team after three seasons.
Basketball Owls, despite longer history than football programs have only one NCAA tournament appearance to their name with one conference regular season title and one of conference and division regular seasons championships to their names.
None of their players went onto having a career in NBA and the programs association with NBA is very small by the fact that their team is currently coached by Michael Curry who had spent some time playing as a guard in NBA and then served as head coach of Detroit Pistons.
As the university’s history grows and evolves the football and basketball programs might start fielding loads of future pro players, at the moment there isn’t many Owls out there in pro leagues but it isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
