About Zakir Hussain

Zakir Hussain is a famous Indian percussionist who has inherited his father’s longing for bringing the Indian music to the global arena. The recordings of Zakir Hussain include various albums with George Harrison, Van Morrison, Tito Puente and Joe Henderson. He also collaborated with the Hong Kong and New Orleans Symphonies. He worked with a number of renowned artists and joined a British guitarist John McLaughlin together with an Indian violinist Shankar to introduce a multinational superband to the international public. Although the band has split in 1978, they later reunited to conduct a tour known as Remember Shakti, which had a great success among the mainstream audience. Hussain has also achieved enormous success as a bandleader. In the 1980s, he toured with his Rhythm Experience and his debut album Making Music. All this was aimed at uniting East and West by creating music that would appeal to both parts of the world. He is proud to have a long list of awards which he obtained throughout his professional career. Back in 1988, he became the youngest percussionist to receive the Padma Shri award by the government of India. Today, Zakir Hussain continues his musical career bringing Eastern and Western musical culture together and incorporating his individuality in each of his creations.
