About David Gilmour

Best known for his involvement in Pink Floyd, David Gilmour is an English musician, singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist.  His parents were the biggest supporters of his musical interests and allowed him to further foster his interests throughout childhood.  His inspiration began to take off when he heard Elvis Presley’s “Heart Break Hotel” and the Everly Brothers’ “Bye Bye Love”. His early career began covering Beatles songs with a small group and trekking Europe in search for work and venues to play.  After a while spent impoverished and malnourished, Gilmour decided to return to England where he stumbled upon old friends playing in a new band called Pink Floyd.

?            In 1967 Nick Mason, the drummer of Pink Floyd, approached Gilmour and offered him a spot to perform with the band as a guitarist and singer.  Gilmour accepted the offer and became the band’s fifth member.

Gilmour sang much of Pink Floyds vocals but came into conflict with one of the band members, Roger Walters.  Gilmour believed his talents where under used by Pink Floyd and decided to take his ideas and develop his own solo album, David Gilmour, in order to showcase his talents.  He released 4 solo albums in total and all of them managed to make it into the US Top 40.  His attempt did get him recognition and he gathered support along the way for his venture.  Along with his solo career he also helped to produce for other acts and also worked as a concert sound engineer for Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Robbie Robertson and others.  A few of the leftover songs recorded from the album were too late though, and were adapted into “Comfortably Numb” that went into the album The Wall.  Ultimately, Gilmour stayed with the band and became its headman when Roger Walters, who was then the leader of the group, decided to leave in 1985.

Gilmour is mainly regarded as a lead guitarist and his solos in “Comfortably Numb”, “Time”, and “Money” reached The Top 100 Greatest Guitar Solos.  Along with the guitar, Gilmour played bass, keyboard, banjo, drums, and even the saxophone, among other instruments.  Rolling Stone magazine has ranked Gilmour number 14 of all-time guitarists, and he is often regarded as one of the most important guitarists of the 70s.  Gilmour was also made Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his musical contributions.  He is listed number 36 greatest voices in rock by Planet Rock listeners in 2009.  Other awards and recognitions for his musical contributions include the Ivor Novello Lifetime Contribution Award, Outstanding Contribution to Music by the Q Awards, and he has received an honorary doctorate from the Anglia Ruskin University.
