About East Michigan Eagles

East Michigan Eagles football team was born in time for season of 1891 with basketball arriving very shortly to the university in 1897. The Eagles has been located in many conferences but since 1966 they are located in Mid-American Conference NCAA Division I (FBS for football), West.

The colleges colours are green and white and their mascot is an American bald eagle wearing EMU jersey that everyone calls Swoop. Their main rivals are Central Michigan Chippewas and Western Michigan Broncos.

The football programs have struggled through most of their history. Their best years were the late twenties and mid- fifties where they won most of their 10 conference championships.Their last title fell in 1987.

The Eagles are sadly among the worst Division I teams with all time record of 430-529-47. They have been to two Bowl games. They lost the first one in Pioneer Bowl against Louisiana Tech and won their second appearance this time against San Jose State in California Bowl in 1987 which was their last year of significant team success.

It is not surprising there isn’t many Eagles from Michigan among the NFL players. The university produced 16 NFL draft picks in their history. Currently there are four players on NFL teams rosters.

From the past players there are some that won Super Bowl like Charlie Batch, a quarterback who spent 14 seasons in the league, most of them as a back up of his hometown team, Pittsburgh Steelers which he won two Super Bowls with. His best personal accomplishment was winning Whizzer Award for the NFL man of the year.

Other players coming from the program included quite a few offensive and defensive linemen who got to play some seasons in NFL but failed to capture some awards or accomplishments, including AL Clark, Lionel Dalton or Jim Pietrzak.

Basketball programs struggled with team success, only reaching NCAA Tournaments four times and their highest point being 1991 year where they climbed all the way to the Sweet Sixteen. The Eagles won four conference tournament championships and five conference regular season titles.

Despite the lack of programs success there were some players that made great careers in NBA, namely George Gervin who spent 14 seasons playing in ABA/NBA where he was NBA scoring champion four times when playing for the Spurs. He was named All- Star game MVP in 1980, it was one of his 9 appearances in such game. Gervin also was named to All- NBA First and Second team total of 7 times. His number 44 was retired by the Spurs.

Despite the overall lack of sport success in two of most popular sports in the world the East Michigan University still fielded some well accomplished athletes that made a great use of their college time to shine in pro sports.
