About Duke Blue Devils

Duke Blue Devils are NCAA Division I team (FBS for football) that are located in Atlantic Coast Conference in the Coastal Division. The football program took off in 1888 and basketball joined shortly after in 1906.

The college’s colours are duke blue and white and their mascot is Blue Devil. The programs main rivalries are formed against North Carolina Tar Heels, Virginia Cavaliers and Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

Blue Devils won had never won a national title in the history of their football program although there is one title that the college left unclaimed (from 1936). They won one division title and to date they have 17 Conference titles and despite some struggles since the sixties the Blue Devils are currently on the return to some success under their coach. The college went to 12 Bowls and have a combined record of 4-8 but four of their last appearances occurred in four last seasons that led to winning Pinstripe Bowl in 2015.

There have been few College Hall of Famers hailing from Duke, including Ben Bennet, a querterback that had the most success in AFL where he was the league MVP in 1988. He was also named to the AFL 25 Greatest players list in 23rd position. He played some seasons in NFL.

Another notable Blue Devil that made to NFL is Sonny Jurgensen who played for seventeen seasons as a quarterback, during that time he led the NFL in passing yards five times, twice in passing touchdowns. He was named to Pro Bowl five times and eventually after nearly 10 years from retirement he was inducted into Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Basketball program has been doing great, especially in XXI century. The Blue Devil won five NCAA championships (three since 2001), they have also been runner ups six times. They have the best NCAA tournament winning percentage among all the NCAA programs.

The program had gone to 40 NCAA tournaments and had won 19 conference tournament and regular season championships to date, this being a record among the ACC teams.

There has been over 70 players that went into being selected in NBA drafts including names like Grant Hill, now a part owner of Atlanta Hawks, while playing in NBA he was chosen to NBA All- Star game seven times, he was NBA Co- Rookie of the year as well as winner of NBA Sportsmanship award three times.

Another Blue Devil among the NBA players is Shane Battier, who won two NBA titles with Miami Heat, he was the NBA teammate of the year as well as named to NBA All- Defensive Second team twice.
