The franchise’s colours are Honolulu Blue, Silver, Black and White and the team’s mascot are Roary the Lion and Theo “Gridiron” Spight, a fight song singer.
Lions are placed in NFC North Division, which is closely contested and it had been historically between the Lions, Packers, Bears and Vikings. There’s no lack of fiery histories of closely fought games between Detroit and their divisional foes.
Lions had won championship four times but their last win happened in 1957 which makes it the second longest championship drought in the NFL.
Detroit Lions are one of the four current teams to not have reached the Super Bowl and the only NFC Conference team to accomplish that feat.
The team is led by Jim Caldwell who holds the NFL record posted by a rookie coach by winning his first 14 straight games while coaching Colts. He’s been contracted to Detroit Lions since 2014 and having experience as a quarterback’s coach in the past he should not struggle with getting the full potential out of his star quarterback, Matt Stafford.
Matt was chosen in 2009 NFL Draft with first overall pick by Lions and has stayed with the team. Known for having one of the strongest arms amongst NFL gunslingers Stafford was the fastest player in NFL history to pass 10000 yards through the air. He also became the fourth quarterback to reach 5000 passing yards in a single season.
Main source of support for Matt is Calvin Johnson who as a wide receiver rewrote the books in history of NFL by posting many records and achieving many milestones making him ranking within top 6 of Top 100 Players list in last 4 consecutive years.
Defensively, Lions can count on assistance of Haloti Ngata, defensive tackle who was traded from Ravens. Ngata has an experience and a Super Bowl ring as well as 5 Pro Bowls nominations.
Glover Quin is another big time contributor to Lions’ defence, the free safety led the league in total interceptions with 7 in 2014 he also was honoured to be voted to a Pro Bowl.
The team’s management can sleep peacefully knowing that they also have on their roster a NFL record holder in longest field goal of 64 yards in Matt Prater. The kicker was named a Special Team Player of the Week several times in his career and with quite a few years of possible kicking there’s plenty of chance to add few more awards or perhaps to beat his own record.
Due to being in such a competitive division it’s been hard to shine at times but one must never rule out the explosiveness of Detroit Lions.
