About DePaul Blue Demons

DePaul Blue Demons compete in Big East Conference in NCAA Division I which is a place for all sports excluding football that isn’t sponsored there. The starting point of the conference which was established in 2013 were seven catholic universities that included DePaul’s as well.

DePaul basketball program had been independent for a long time during its history until it joined the GMC in 1991.

The team’s colours are royal blue and scarlet and they’re represented by a mascot named DIBS that stands for Demon In a Blue Suit.

The program’s main rivals are Butler Dogs, Marquette Golden Eagles and St. John’s Red Storm.

The Blue Demons enjoyed some success during its history, especially late seventies and eighties were really fruitful for them. The basketball programs appeared in 22 NCAA tournaments, their last time was in 2004. Their biggest success was to reach the Final Four twice, in 1943 and 1979. They can also add two conference regular season championships to their name.

The university has produced some NBA and ABA players through the years. The most accomplished ones that got inducted into Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame are Mark Aguirre and George Milan.

Aguirre played 13 seasons in NBA and his biggest trophies, two NBA championships, came after he joined the Pistons in 1989. Prior to that he played for Dallas Mavericks and was chosen to appear in three NBA All- Star games.

Mikan played for ten seasons and won five BAA/NBA championships, all with Minneapolis Lakers. He was the NBL MVP in 1948 and twice he was NBL champion too.

He played in four All- Star games and was named All- Star game MVP once. He led the NBL twice and NBA three times in scoring and he was once NBA rebounding champion. He was named to NBA 50 Greatest Players in 1996.

One of the current Blue Demons in NBA is Wilson Chandler who was drafted by the Knicks in 2007. He played with them and then had a short stint in China during NBA lockout before coming back to NBA, this time to Denver Nuggets where he currently plays as a small forward.

It’s unlucky that DePaul doesn’t field the football team but given how well some of its players have done in basketball in the past, one might enjoy supporting the basketball program.
