California Golden Bears are located in Pacific Coast Conference (Pac- 12) in first division. Football team is member of North Division (FBS). The college’s colours are Berkeley blue and California gold and the mascot is a bear that goes by the name Oski (which is also another name for the god Odin from Norse mythology).

The football program kicked of here in 1886 while basketball started its roots in 1905. The college’s main rivals are Stanford Cardinal, UCLA Bruins and Oregon Ducks.

The football team of University of California had won five national titles all of which happened between 1920 and 1937. To the date, the Golden Bears claimed 14 conference titles and took part in 22 Bowls with a combined record of 11-10-1. Their most frequent Bowl had been the Rose one, which they played in 8 times, winning it twice and tying it once.

One of their most known former players is Ron Rivera who played linebacker for the Chicago Bears, winning Super Bowl with them in 1985. After nine seasons he retired and took on variety of coaching posts which led him to becoming the Panthers head coach, helping the club in reaching Super Bowl 50. Rivera also won NFL Head Coach of the Year award twice.

There’s plenty of Golden Bears in NFL currently, including players like Aaron Rodgers or Cameron Jordan.

Rodgers who is regarded as one of the best in the history of the sport, has led the Green Bay Packers to Super Bowl victory, where he was named the MVP of it, on top of that the well known quarterback had been the league’s MVP twice among many other accolades he acquired during his career that has not finished yet.

Jordan has been a steady defensive force among the New Orleans Saints defensive line with two Pro Bowls to his name and being ranked in top 100 Players of the Year 2014.

The basketball team won pre- tournament Premo- Porretta championship and added NCAA tournament championship in 1959, being runner up team in 1960.

Altogether the Golden Bears went to 19 NCAA Tournaments and were the conference regular season champions 15 times.

There were few distinctive players that made it well while in NBA, including Kevin Johnson and Jason Kidd. Johnson, current mayor of Sacramento, played for 12 years in NBA, mainly in Phoenix Suns and he went to three NBA All-Star games and was named NBA most improved player in 1989.

Kidd, currently head coach of Milwaukee Bucks, was NBA champion in 2011 with Dallas Mavericks, led the NBA five seasons in assists, he was chosen to NBA All- Star game 10 times and was NBA Co- Rookie of the Year in 1995  with Grant Hill, among many other awards and nominations.

It appears that the Golden Bears are well equipped in providing team success built on individual accomplishments that translate very well into Pro lives.
